Anoop Opens Up

The doorbell sounded at 9am. I trotted to my front door behind Chubby, who was at the door long before I was. Track pants and a t-shirt and bare feet. I knew who it would be

Anoop’s handsome face was looking at me when I opened the door. Bright eyes, big smile.

“Hey-ho,” said Anoop. He bent down. “Chubby boy how are you?”

“Hey,” I said. Chubby leapt about. “Chubby is pleased to see you.”

“Why, aren’t you?”

“No, no, I am. I’m happy to see you.”

“Good to hear,” said Anoop. “Can’t have you talking through your dog like he is a ventriloquist doll.”

I got down on the floor and pretended to stick my hand up Chubby’s arse. “Hello Anoop, I just want to tell you that Josh is pleased to see you too.”

“I didn’t think I’d be standing here watching you fist your dog.”

“The weeks are lonely, man’s best friend comforts me.”

“Why are they lonely?”

“No, they are not lonely,” I said.

Anoop looked confused.

“I was just trying to justify fisting Chubby’s arse.’

Chubby look from Anoop to me upon hearing his name. Tongue out, big smile.

We sat out on my back veranda with coffee. The sun was golden, it was a gorgeous morning.

“My father works very hard to provide for his children.”

“Yes, but that is a parent’s roll.”

“You don’t understand, he is a migrant, was a migrant, he works 12 hours a day in his convenience store, to provide for my sister and I…”

“Yes, that’s great…”

“But he wants me to be a doctor…”

“You will be a doctor.’

“But he wants me to be a straight doctor, with a wife and kids.”

“So, you will be a doctor with a husband and maybe some kids.”

“He will be disappointed…”

“Isn’t it a shame that we have to deal with disappointment in our parents in such a way that it denies us our very existence.”

“Being gay will cause the disappointment.”

“Isn’t it a shame that gay guys have to trade away their lives against not causing disappointment in their parents…”

“But he will never understand, they will never understand.”

“Yes, but, you shouldn’t have to adapt your life in a way that helps them to understand it.”

“Yes, I understand what you are saying, but what am I meant to do?”

“Live your life and be happy, in exactly the same way your sister will live hers.”

“But it will bring great shame.”

“Our lives are not shameful. Ultimately, who we love is not shameful.”

“It is easy for you to say.”

“No, I don’t buy that at all. If we all stand up and say who we are, it will be easy for every one of us.”
