Solo Traveller - introduce Jason
It is a new year, 2012. Fuck Nick and his we’re-both-single declaration. Still, it is a new year and we should do something different with the new year. There should be change, should there not? We should stretch ourselves and grow. New Year’s resolutions? No, I don’t really believe in them, but that doesn’t mean no change. All of life should be directed towards growth and renewal.
So, accordingly, I’m going to focus on health and fitness. Mind and body. Food and exercise. That means that I am going to concentrate on exercise, and try to steer my diet in healthier directions.
So, I am meeting up with a new guy with who I’m going to potentially work out at the gym. His name is Jason. It is good to work out with someone neutral, I think, so it is business, and not competitive. It is just exercise and not social.
Jason is a friend of Mick Brewer’s. He wants someone with who he doesn’t have a relationship, someone who is into the gym, or wants to take his gym seriously, with whom who he can be completely objective.
We met at the gym, of course. 6pm. How would I know him? He’s blonde. He said he’d text me when he got there.
“Tell me what you will be wearing?” Oh, I couldn’t help myself, the old Josh just had to play a silly game. Oh, don’t judge, humour me.
“I’ll be wearing a black tracksuit.”
“Not sure that will stand out.”
“Oh, ok then. I’ll wear half black track suit, half red track suit.”
“I’ll wear half black, half grey.”
“Ok, see you there.”
I do like the word okay written out in full, however. “See you there.”
We just kind of met up like it was meant to be. “Hi, I’m Jason.” He held out his hand. His handshake was firm. Big hands.
“Hi. Josh.”
“But, I guess we already knew that, hey?” said Jason.
“Yes,” I said. “Tell me something I don’t know?” These were the most vital moments in our relationship, even if they didn’t exactly feel like it. These were the moments that we would decided if we would continue, or if we’d ultimately walk away. In fact, what Jason said in the next few seconds would be the most important words he would ever say to me.
He thought momentarily, smiled, and began to speak.
