Cousin Mitchell
I met up with my cousin Mitchell. He came over for a smoke, bad him. We joked about how neither of us have downloaded the government app. Te hee, te hee. He said lockdown was getting to him, he just had to get out of the house. We sat on my back veranda.
I told him about Ben.
“Didn’t he have a girlfriend?”
“Not anymore.”
“I know a guy who plays football with Ben.”
“Oh, really who?”
“Andre Darren.”
“The red head?”
“Yes, that is him.”
“How do you know him?”
“Oh, look Josh, there is something I have been meaning to tell you,” said Mitchell. “I’m… I’m… I’m gay.”
“Well.” I always knew. “Welcome to the team.”
“You didn’t know.”
“Oh, no…” tell the truth. “It didn’t… er… doesn’t come as a complete surprise.”
“I wanted to tell you before this, but I have only come to terms with it now myself.”
“That’s okay, I get it.”
“Thanks.”
“Does the whole family know?”
“Yes.”
“How was your mum and dad.”
“Mum was hysterical about grandchildren, until dad pointed out she had two, presumably heterosexual, and capable sons, and that she would, from all guess’ be bereft of grandchildren.”
“But I wanted to see little Mitchell.” Mitchell’s mum pinches his cheeks.
“Yeah, Amanda flipped out for a few weeks, but came around rather quickly. “Is there a blood test you can have,” was Amanda’s first response. “You know, to confirm it.”
“Roslyn pulled herself together in the second week,” said Mitchel. “I think she’d been talking to her girlfriends, who didn’t think it was so bad to have a gay son. Then she dropped the I’ve-just-been-stabbed-by-my-own-son hangdog look she’d had for 7 days, was it only 7 days?”
I wondered what Amanda and Roslyn had been talking about?
“It still doesn’t explain how you know Andre Darren?”
Mitchell clearly blushed. “I had a thing with him…”
“You and Andre?”
“Yes.”
“All that red hair?”
“It’s what attracted me to him.”
“Andre is gay?”
“Well,” said Mitchell. “He’s done some pretty gay stuff when he has been… with… me.”
“Andre Darren?”
“Andre Darren.”
“He was the only one who expressed unease about Ben being in the showers after Ben told the team he was all gay. None of the others said they had a problem with Ben, except for Andre.”
“He probably fancies Ben.”
“Andre Darren?”
“Certified gay, I would have to say. I reckon I am qualified to talk about him being gay.”
“Ben, Grant, and now Andre,” I said. “There isn’t a straight boy in those showers at that football club.”
