Daniel Goes Out With Mike
I put a load of washing on and I was and ready to go by 10am.
I was rah, rah, rah as I walked out of the gym by 10.30. Fresh. Alive. Clean. The blood is pumping freely.
Mike called up to see if Daniel wanted to accompany him out for a big night, early last night.
"Are you up for a big night?" he asked.
"Oh... gosh... gee, am I up for a big night?" Mike hey. Big night. I'm laying bets that the plan is for it to end at Mike's place.
Big smile, voice crescendoing. "Considering... I have Monday off, I reckon you are on."
Bro, bro, bro, look at him smiling into the phone. He knoweth not what evil forces are in play.
"Even better," said Daniel. When I told him.
Apparently, Mike said he had organised everything and Daniel didn't have to worry about a thing.
"So... what time do you reckon?"
A big night indeed.
Mike would drop by and pick him up. When Mike was waiting and I had him alone in the lounge room.
"What are your intensions towards my brother?"
He laughed. "You are kidding me, Josh. Aren’t you."
"No."
"Everybody here is an adult and able to make their minds up for themselves."
"Yes, I agree, but Daniel doesn't know the subtext."
"I'm not even admitting that there is a subtext. So, I shot my mouth off last time I saw you, they are just words," said Mike. "And, when do we ever really know the subtext in anything we do?"
I held my hands in the air, I was more than a little aware I was sounding like someone’s prudish aunt.
"I'm just looking out for Daniel."
"Why don't you let it be loose, as you always are famous for saying."
"Don't you think you should tell him?"
"We're all on a spectrum, where any number of possibilities are open to us at any stage, it is just fear, or conditioning that stops us from making some, what would probably turn out to be worthwhile, choices, if we could just leave the judgement out of our decisions behind us. Famous Joshism"
Well. I opened and closed my mouth all at the same time. It's not often that you are quoted back at yourself, almost verbatim, it takes your breath away.
"Did I get it right," asked Mike.
“Daniel is not on your spectrum.”
"Hi, ready," said Daniel standing in the hallway door. Hot jeans, tight t-shirt, showing off his gym work to perfection.
"Yes," I answered Mike.
"Everything okay?" said Daniel
"Yes. Couldn't be better. Let's go," said Mike.
Daniel didn't come home this morning.
