Nephew Matt

My Adelaide nephew, our Adelaide nephew has come to stay with us. I wasn't keen until I found out he may be gay, then I softened. I didn’t consciously soften, but I could feel it in side me, despite myself. Give the kid a chance, I guess. It was Daniel's idea, though. Eldest child syndrome. Actually, it was Amanda's idea, let's face it, she just came in on our weakest flank, Daniel.

"I know my boys," said Amanda, looking over her teacup. "Daniel is the sweet one. He has a better nature. Who do you think I am going to ask?"

"Thanks for the seal of approval."

"Oh, you know I love the both of you, you’re my favourite, after all. But you never do anything for anybody else, sweetie, you need to practice. It is character building." She sipped her tea. "You were the lawyer, after all."

"Can't help but get a why-aren't-you-working dig in, can you?"

"Don't be silly darling, it's just that Daniel is the doctor, honey. It goes to character."

"How long does he want to stay?"

"Matt's a nice boy, you'll like him. He's nice looking."

“How long?”

“Why don’t you find that out for yourself.” I instantly thought she was suggesting that I fiddle with Matty. I shook my head. She meant, she had given me the lead, now I needed to follow up on it. The Grant women are always trying to get the Grant men together, to make the decisions, the women folk want.

And Daniel was all, "That's what you do for family, isn't it."

“I knew you wouldn’t let me down, Daniel,” purred Amanda, right on schedule.

"We do?" I said. "This is indefinite."

"You'd want one of your Uncles to help you out, if you were a lad in a big city."

"One of my Uncle's did?"

"Is that a euphemism for..."

"No," I said. "Uncle Jeff helped me out."

“I’m going now, boys,” said Amanda. Kiss kiss, she picked up her bag and she was out that door.

"What did Jeff do?" asked Daniel when it was just he and I again.

Really, what does it take, I though. I forget that Daniel is straight sometime. He lulls me into a false sense... I didn't mind Uncle Jeff, not one little bit. He's Amanda's change of life baby brother. Nana's, Amanda's mother's, change of life baby. I always had the hots for him, he is only a few years older than Daniel and I. He'd come and visit on family holidays, at Lakes Entrance, he'd wear his speedos, he looked good. I’d whack off at night… oh, there were many speedo clad hunks on the beach. What I had them doing with Uncle Jeff…

"Oh." Daniel pulled a face like he was being visualising Jeff and I. "Are you saying Jeff is a..."

"What?" I said. "Jeff is five years older than me."

"Jeff came on to you?"

"I was coming on to him as a school boy." I said. "Let's be real about it. Year 11 and 12, what he must have thought." I laughed. "Well, I know what he thought."

Daniel winced.

"This is indefinite, though," I said. I'm all for giving the kid a room for the weekend, but until he finds his feet?

Our third bedroom was a problem too. It is a weird little room, more of a cupboard than a bedroom. It is big enough for a double bed and that is it. Its got built in robes though. It has always been the same, since dad bought it as an investment property in the 1980s. Sometime before that, the floor plan was changed to fit in an internal bathroom, which left this odd little room as the third cupboard bedroom. It doesn’t get the benefit of the side garden. The other 2 bedrooms have French doors and a court yard with chairs and screening.

The small bedroom being full of ski equipment didn’t help. As it turned out, all of the ski equipment disappeared under the bed. And the rest of the tat easily into the loft extension. Dad had always said he was going to fit the staircase to the loft, and that he’d make it a proper room. How many years have I heard that? Anyway, it got cleaned out, Daniel and I last weekend.

Somehow Amanda had got to Daniel's blokie, help out a young Grant. Not that Matt's name is Grant, he's from the maternal side of the family. Mother’s sister’s son. But you get the idea, the sense of family that was being liberally splashed around the lounge room.

Well, anyway, it turns out Matt is gay, so I changed my mind. He's not out to any of the Adelaide family, I don’t think even Aunty Rosalyn knows that. I wonder if I should word Amanda up? It looks like he has moved to the big smoke to come out.

Matt's big and blonde. He's 22. He's nice. He's got a job in a hotel. He says he's gay. He's got mates in Melbourne now. The only one I've met is big and muscly and just a tad gay mate. Probably doesn't have to tell many people he's gay. Matt says he's not interested in having a boy friend. He's cute enough, Matt, not the mate, who's name I have already forgotten. He needs to lose his puppy fat, Matt. He doesn't seem very gay. He probably surprises people when he tells them he is gay, but then again, I'm not sure if he tells other people he's gay. I haven't met any of his other friends, yet. Not really fussed. But he goes out drinking a lot and regularly crashes the night at some mate's place. I don't know how long he is staying, but it is indefinite at the moment.

I want to sniff his undies. Is that wrong? A pair he has worn, that he has thrown on the floor of his bed room. Matt works full time. I'm not working.

Daniel doesn't notice Matt because Daniel works long hours. I don't see much of Matt, and I'm home all the time. He kind of keeps to himself.
